DONRUSS, HUCKABEE AND THE "STAR"
Donruss has the right to be embarrassed. How could anyone approve the "event used shirt" in the shape of a star right in the crotch of presidential candidate Mike Huckabee.

An attack against his conservatism? Not likely.

A shot at his manhood? Doubtful.

Someone rushing to get it done? We hope not.

Low quality quality control? Maybe

Funnier than funny? Oh yeh.

Embarrassing? You Betcha!

They could have used a circle, a square, an oblong or just anything but a star. The star just sits there with MH spreading on top of the point. As one of my colleagues pronounced, "Ouch!."

Donruss where are you?

BECKETT THE COLLECTIBLE?
Not for a long time. In the heyday of the hobby under Dr. Jim Beckett, the magazine itself was designed as a collectible. Tuff Stuff was the same.

You had a cover with very little text and a back cover with NO text. The idea? It was a collectible. That was the feeling anyway and well, like it or not it hapened often enough. It was good enough for autographs, framing and collecting even selling.

Then came the front cover text followed by advertising on the back.

Soon it was all over and the collectible cover was gone. So too much of the inside which had been collectible was no longer.

Some people still save them, hanging onto something from the past, but there is no need. They are gone the way of the .220 hundred thousand dollar player and the slugger who hits 50 homers and strikes out less than 100 times.

and we're back.

CORPORATES AND WHY THEY LIE

Simply put, I don't know why? It should seem like a simple answer. Corporate Greed and Profits. That should be the answer.

But it's not entirely true. When you read the story in The Brill Report about Topps and their web site selling directly to the public and the statement about former Marketing Director Peter Sawkins (he's no longer there and in talking to a couple other insiders they are glad he's not), Sawkins flat out lied. There I said it. He lied.

His answer might be; "Things changed." That was the typical answer I got from both Mike Berkus and Kenny Goldin at The Score Board. Things change.

How about the word integrity? I said it and I'll stick by it.

I guess I have an affinity for such things. I hate to tell someone something, then change my mind later after I've given my promise. There were times I'd eat the thing and suffer the consequences so I didn't have to go back on my word. Then again, I'm not a corporation.

Trust is something we've gotten away from in recent years and it started at the top. The corporate ladder, Richard Nixon and others. Trust? Question it? As a reporter it's my nature and training to never trust anyone with what they say, especially if it's a company statement. There is always a bit of a lie in there.

My second grade teacher perhaps taught me one of the best spelling lessons ever, the way to spell "believe" is to remember there is a little "lie" in the middle. It works with corporations too. They all lie. It's gotten worse with the Internet because people question more or there are more people questioning what they see and hear.

It is all about lying and whether to save face, or save the next line of profits or to CYA (Cover Your Ass) it is there none the less.

And that is no lie.

UPPER DECK AND THE PARODY
I'm really disappointed in Upper Deck and it's management now. I was not happy to see the company offer the parody of Michael Eisner, or, the Michael Buysner card. Just plain childish Mr. McWilliam...just very poor taste.

To lose to your rival is one thing but to make unwarranted jokes and discuss it as parody is just uncalled for. Right now I'll call for Richare McWilliam to step down over this. It's that bad and although he won't this was just mean spirited and childish, very childish.

CYBER MONDAY?
All you have to say is "point and click," and there it is, Cyber Monday. Some believe Cyber Monday will eventually replace Black Friday and it may.

However as the internet gets more loaded according to one study, it will become so bogged down and slow, people will begin to beg off and head for the retail stores. They may even head for the mom & pop outlets.

Oh would that be nice. Chances are however by the time this day comes, those M&P's will be gone for good. Well, one can only dream.
